When I work with clients who are struggling with their dating life, talking to me about the horrendous dates their going on, how they keep attracting misaligned, unavailable, or unhealthy people into their orbit, one of the first things I look at in their chart is their 5th house.

In Astrology, we have house systems that are based on our rising sign. The rising sign is the most personal placement in a birth chart (IMO) because it changes every two hours, and minute by minute the degree & house systems shift. You share the same sun sign as 1/12th of the population, you can share moon signs with people born within 2.5 days of you, but the rising sign and how your house system starts is totally unique and helps you recognize the nuances and themes that play out in your life with more accuracy.

So what does the 5th house tell us about you, your dating life, and how to find a more aligned partner? Or at least people you don’t loathe going on dates with, or getting physical with!

The 5th House: Pleasure, Passion, and Play

The 5th house gives us deep insights into:

• love, romance & dating

• fun, play, pleasure & humor

• sex & sexuality/sexual orientation

• hobbies & creativity

• fertility/having children/pregnancy

• our self-expression

• parties & indulgences

• good fortune, gambling & luck

• birth, abortion, or views on childbirth

We’ve talked before on Star-Crossed about the 7th house as the house that helps you find your soulmate & marriage, but we can’t get to the top of the staircase without taking the proper steps in between! The 5th house gives us a better understanding of your view of love rather than the long-term partner or marriage/long-term relationship itself. It helps you understand what you like, what you’re turned-on by, how you like to date & be playful at the beginning, and your dating style overall.

As noted, you’re going to need your exact time of birth to figure out which sign your 5th house is ruled by. As a western/tropical astrologer, I see the house systems as insights and themes in a person’s life that are directly correlated to the shifts that the we experience here on Earth. I also prefer to use Placidus house system (taking into consideration the nuance of the birth chart, although Whole House astrology tends to be easier with blanket statements and lessons like this..). You’ll see this in the example below, where the houses and the signs don’t match up perfectly. I prefer that because it’s more truthful, detailed, and accurate - after working with 1,000’s of clients.

In the example chart below: we can see that this person’s 5th house sign is Scorpio as the line that the 5th house STARTS with runs downward, into the sign of SCORPIO.

From there, you have our first key insight into your dating life: the sign that rules over your 5th house of play, pleasure, sex, romance, and dating!

And in example: I have a client who struggles with attracting extremely egotistical men, men who want to dim her light or “humble her”, and she often fawns in the presence of these types of men. She’ll find herself drawn to the obnoxiously loud, show-off types, the types who need to make everyone laugh (even if it’s at her expense)… guess what sign rules her 5th house? Leo.

So the part of this, like we discuss in all aspects of my practice here at Star-Crossed is that there is a LIGHT and a DARK energy to ALL signs and placements. This work will be about going towards the light with your chart.

The 5th House Ruler: Where You Take Risks & Approach Romance

Similarly to how we explored the 7th House Ruler to figure out WHERE and HOW to meet your soulmate, the 5th House Ruler is going to give us a better understanding of WHERE and HOW you like to take risks, your approach to romance, how your dating story *starts* with a star-crossed partner.

So the SIGN that rules your 5th house, we’re now going to correlate that to a planet. Take that SIGN and find the ruling planet below:

• Aries = Mars

• Taurus = Venus

• Gemini = Mercury

• Cancer = Moon

• Leo = Sun

• Virgo = Mercury

• Libra = Venus

• Scorpio = Mars

• Sagittarius = Jupiter

• Capricorn = Saturn

• Aquarius = Saturn

• Pisces = Jupiter

Great! Now that you have this second key bit of information (your 5th house ruler) we can figure out more in-depth insights into your sex, dating, and love life to understand how you like to date, what you’re attracted to, and how to improve your dating life overall, using your birth chart.

So take that PLANET and find it in your birth chart. With the example chart above, we saw that their 5th house was ruled by the sign SCORPIO. Scorpio’s ruling planet is Mars, so we would go find that person’s Mars placement in their birth chart. Which, as we can see below, using their chart again, is in their 1st house in the sign of Leo.
