Using Astrocartography to Travel, Find Love, Fame & More ✨
Where are the best (and worst) places around the world for YOU?
Hi babe, we’re back again with another edition of PRAGMA: Astrology & Relationships with Meghan Rose. Today I want to talk about the power of Locational Astrology, or Astrocartography. After a full month of traveling through London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Riviera Maya, Mexico it’s as fresh in my travelled-out mind as ever to share this lesser-known Astrology secret with you.
Astrocartography has become a hot-buzz topic in recent months, and for good reason! The astrological practice of Astrocartography allows you to figure out the best places in the world to live, travel, and fall in love (as well as the worst!) simply by inputting your date, time, and location of birth (this is my favorite site to use).
Once you’ve generated a map of the globe with all of your planetary lines *uniquely* planted across it, you can start to explore exactly where in the world you could tap into great business opportunities using your Jupiter lines, where you’d do well to connect with others and have easy conversations along your Mercury line, and even areas of the world where you might find love (or at least feel more beautiful and sought after) by going to your Venus line.
Astrocartography is a powerful tool to utilize when choosing where you should go (or avoid) in the world. I should know… I’ve been using Astrocartography (or locational astrology) to plan my travels since 2021 (peep my article about my 7-month trip around the world on Well + Good!).
But instead of telling you more about that trip, I am now writing to you from Copenhagen, Denmark (Hej, from the land of the Little Mermaid!) to tell you how you can use this practice yourself, and start to plan your next trip, move, or search for love… or tap into these potent energies that will propel you into the next best chapter of your life!
First Off… What is Astrocartography?
Astrocartography (or locational Astrology), as mentioned, is a tool to help you understand where your birth chart’s planetary energy interacts with the energetics of places all around the world. It’s not uncommon to find that you input your birth information and find that you have either really positively or negatively charged lines running across where you were born and where you live now… even though you don’t input where you are living currently!
For example: I have a Neptune line running through where I was born (just an hour north of Boston in New Hampshire) and grew up feeling very isolated, disconnected, and honestly like I was speaking a different language while living there! Neptune is the planet of spirituality, illusions, dreams and inspiration. New Hampshire was also the place that I originally opened up to my interest in Astrology, Tarot, and spirituality. Even though it felt like an uphill battle to connect with my spirituality and feel confident enough to share it with others, it turned out to be a worthwhile dance with Neptune as I am in my sixth year of working as an Astrologer full-time!
I then moved in 2017 to Los Angeles and have called this city my home for the last 7.5 years. You may be wondering what line runs through here in my Astrocartography map? My moon line, a.k.a. the area that makes you feel comfortable and at home.
Many charts (mine included) also have lines that run through the ocean, war-torn cities that they will never be able to travel to, and places that are otherwise unreachable. This can feel disheartening, but after years of offering Astrocartography readings, I can tell you this the same way I shared with NYLON: you don’t have to travel or move to the cities that your Astrocartography lines run through. Instead, listen to the energies of these in a metaphorical sense. In example: some of my closest friends were born and raised in Toronto, Greece, and Washington D.C. — places I have not been to (yet!) but all have my Venus lines running through them. Venus is the planet of love and relationships — making these beautiful beings some of my favorite to connect with!
How Do I Calculate My Astrocartography Chart?
So let’s get into the fun part: calculating YOUR chart! Head here and input your exact date, time, and location of birth. Once you have a confusing, colorful, line-ridden map of the globe, you can start to explore what the world looks like through the energetic lens of your birth chart.
Try not to get overwhelmed. Instead, have fun clicking on some of the elements of your Astrocartography map:
Planet: the symbols at the top that correspond with the planetary symbols used in your birth chart. See the following below for help with learning each symbol and it’s corresponding planet (although you can also click & learn about each of these on your Astrocartography map!)
Chiron (left) and the North Node of destiny (right) are also used on your Astrocartography chart, although they are not planets. Chiron is the asteroid of the wounded healer, and your North Node of Destiny is the energy that brings you purpose and blessings when you embody its themes and traits. It sits opposite to your South Node of Karma (or your comfort zone) and helps you move towards your Higher Self when you are aligned with your North Node. These two symbols are below:
IC/MC/DC/AC: This will tell you if the line is influenced with your…
IC (Imum Coeli): or the starting cusp of your 4th house & the lowest point of your birth chart. This represents home, family, and children and could be a good indicator of those themes changing in your life. Positive or negative connotation depends on the planet this line in your chart is associated with!
MC (midheaven): or the starting cusp of your 10th house & the highest point of your birth chart. This represents career and reputation influence, and is a great indicator of work-related changes, positive or negative depends on the planet this line in your chart is associated with!
DC (descendant): your descendant is the beginning cusp of your 7th house in your birth chart, directly opposite of your ascendant (or rising sign) and it relates to relationships with others, legal matters, long-term contracts, and “others” in general. Planetary lines in Astrocartography influenced by the descendant can point to places where you are more likely to connect with others, stay for longer periods of time, or struggle to separate yourself from the experiences that you are having (or relationships you are creating).
AC (ascendant): your ascendant (or rising sign) is the beginning cusp of your 1st house in your birth chart, this dictates the rest of the house systems in your chart and covers themes of self, physical appearance, confidence, and outward expression. Planetary lines correlated with the AC are more indicative of personal experiences and places where you will feel confident in showing your true self off.
What Lines are the Best for Me to Travel To?
Although every person’s Astrocartography map is going to hold different connotations on “positive” and “negative” based on their own chart.
In example: someone with a 5th house sun would love to travel on their sun line as their natal sun is in the house of romance, sex, passion, and creativity! While someone with an 8th house sun that’s conjunct their Saturn placement might struggle when visiting their sun lines as the 8th house deals with death, taxes, and transformation and when it’s next to their Saturn, it can feel squashed, challenged, and struggle with this energy.
It’s important to see if the planets in your birth chart are positively aspected (and if you need help with this, be sure to book a reading to have this all figured out for you!), but the below list has all of the generally positive Astrocartography lines for you to visit, move to, or meet people from:
Sun: these places help you to feel more confident, self-assured, and energized. Traveling to your sun line can help you to be more expressive and outward with who you are. You will find it easier to align with joy, pride, and spirit here. Truly the happiest lines and places to travel to. Others will pick up on your unique and undeniable shine.
Mercury: these places are great for networking, socializing, writing, speaking, and sharing. Things might feel easier and more fast-paced here and anyone who’s work asks them to write, speak, present, or share would do well living here for business opportunities. Making friends, building community, and social media growth are all easy to obtain here.
Venus: falling in love, increasing how beautiful you see yourself & others see you, flirtation, making money, and finding (or aligning) with your passions. Venus lines are great for increasing the feminine, creative, and effortless flow of life. It’s easy to spark romance in these places, or with people from these places.
Jupiter: the planet of good luck, expansion, good fortune, and optimism shines a bright light on these places. It’s easy to gain recognition, fame, and success on Jupiter lines. You will also notice that whatever you are building grows ten-fold in these parts of the world. It’s easy to stay optimistic and happy when you are on Jupiter lines. This is a great line for building or growing fame and social acknowledgement from others.
North Node: aligning with your passions and purpose, however, it is not the “known” or “comfortable” feeling. You will have to break ties to old versions of yourself in order to thrive in these places. Your NN lines will help you to become the highest version of yourself if you allow yourself to step outside of your comfort zone and take action. You will find out your “why” the longer you stay here or connect with people from your NN lines.
These following planetary lines do not carry an inherently positive or negative charge:
Moon: places that make you feel comfortable and “at home”. It can, however, be easy to fall into ruts and habitual ways of life here if you are not careful. These areas bring about a sense of deep emotion and sensitivity, which can take you away from logic. It’s important to utilize the moon’s ebbs and flows while here, and not get too caught up in any one thought or feeling for too long. Allow yourself to unfold, regenerate, grow, and go within in these spaces. You may feel extra safe with people who are from your moon lines.
Neptune: the planet of spirituality, but also illusions. Neptune casts a veil over these places and faces, making it difficult to discern what’s real and what’s being perceived as real. These places are great for detaching yourself from your Ego if you can flow with its energy. Be curious about your inner world, write down your dreams, and be cautious of who you trust with your heart and soul. Discernment and grounding tactics are vital in these places.
Mars: some people say that it’s easy to incur “burnout” on Mars lines, however, these are also great spaces for deadlines, project completion, great sex, and steamy romance. Mars is the planet of aggression and passion, so make sure that you are ready to play in his flames when you travel here or connect with people from your Mars lines. If Mars is positively aspected in your birth chart, these can be motivating and encouraging areas to go.
What Lines & Places Should I Avoid?
As noted above, you could have really positive aspects in your natal chart to more challenging planets, so don’t let the list below deter you! In example: if you have your Pluto placement in your 9th house of travel, higher education & spirituality in your birth chart, you might gain a lot from traveling to Pluto lines!
However, it is generally recommended to avoid traveling, moving to, and connecting with people on the following Astrocartography lines unless otherwise suggested by a trained professional:
Saturn: the planet of karma, tasks, and lessons. It can be difficult to travel or live on these lines as life often feels like you’re walking against the current. However, in its challenges, you will find yourself more refined, high-quality, and ever-changed to who you were before you came here. Note that you may get stuck working or toiling much more than you are being compensated for in these areas. This is not the “easy” “blessed” “fast track” space on your Astro map… But are you up for the task of upgrading? If so, you do not need to avoid these lines. However, if you are in a physically, emotionally, or mentally weakened state - it may be best to skip these areas.
Uranus: big sudden changes, upheavals, and breakdowns. Uranus’ energy can completely flip your view of self, your perception of life, your close relationships, and your life’s path on its head. This can be disorienting for some, but wildly necessary for others. If you are feeling stuck, stagnant, trapped, or lost: don’t avoid the power that Uranus wields. However, if you are excited and passionate about who and what your life is made up of and would like to continue down the same path, it may be wise to stay away…
Pluto: the planet of secrets, taboo, death, the unconscious, and darkness. Pluto’s energy is heavy and unforgiving. There is a tendency to go through extreme loss when you travel to Pluto lines. Your friendships, the physical life of those you love, the view you have of yourself - these are all up on the chopping block when you travel to Pluto places. However, they can leave you deeply changed and connected to lesser known parts of yourself and your psyche if you are willing to work with its energy. Be cautious before traveling to Pluto lines and try not to do so flippantly.
Chiron: although Chiron is the wounded healer, and this asteroid’s energy can help you to help others, it is oftentimes at the expense of yourself. Chiron was a teacher who helped to enlighten others of their healing capabilities while he himself was physically deteriorating and could not learn his own lessons. “Do as I say, not as I do” type of energy where you are keen to talk your talk, but not walk your walk. Chiron lines can, however, help you to realize your "weak points” or overall kryptonite in life. Great for spiritual retreats, shamanic work, shadow work, and therapy-based healings. However, difficult to live and die in these places without feeling blinded and unfulfilled with what you were able to comprehend about your own life.
